How Pregnancy Tests Work
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG. Your body begins producing hCG after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, and levels rise as the pregnancy develops.
Testing too early after a missed period can produce a negative result even if you are pregnant, simply because hCG levels have not built up enough to be detected. During your appointment, we can discuss timing and let you know whether repeat testing would be helpful.
You will receive your results before leaving and can meet privately with a nurse to have your questions answered.
After a Positive Result
A positive test confirms hCG is present, but it does not tell you everything you need to know. An ultrasound is the necessary next step. It can confirm how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, and whether it is progressing normally.
Without it, you may be missing information that directly affects your health and your options.
